90 degrees is only for when you apologize for doing something super bad like murdering someone’s family member lol you’ll be fine! a small head nod is all you need! hard to describe but you’ll know it when you see it; just copy that!

Most of the time you just bow with your head or at most only very slightly bow in Japan. The only times you have deeper bows is in contexts like working in costumer service, like apologizing for something, sometimes in buisness when needing to be extra polite, or praying to kamisama. As a tourists there are very few contexts you need to do any kind of deep bow.

I don't think you will be doing anything that formal. A slight head bow is probably all you will need to do.

I think doing it slightly or just as a nod is fine— you’re a tourist and they’re not going to fault you for an imperfect bow. Especially if you know some Japanese? You’re good.

If you’re just going as a tourist, you probably won’t need to bow. I’ve been twice and I never did more than a nod….like head and shoulders kind of thing.

You really don’t need to worry about it. Just bow your head a little, but they don’t expect foreigners to match their degree. And often a little handshake and head nod are enough. You only need to do this in a professional context. If you’re going as a tourist, bowing etiquette won’t be an issue at all’s

You can just do what I did when Japanese tourists thanked and bowed to me for taking their photo on top of a mountain in Switzerland ...I panic curtsied while saying "You're welcoooome!" in a singsong voice 😳 I didn't know in the moment if bowing back was appropriate since I'm white... apparently my brain did a quick "What do white people do? Curtsy!!!!! Excellent choice!" An additional note, I'm also 5'10.5" so a friggin giant girl curtsying to these small, cute girls. It haunts me to this day. It happened in March of 2010. I still wonder if they knew it was weird when it happened or if they think that's normal from some white people 🫣
