@jordangarlandmi: Work is finally underway at Lee Plaza — one of Detroit’s most iconic (and long-abandoned) high-rises. Originally opened in 1929 as a luxury residential hotel, it later became senior housing before closing in the ‘90s. Since then, it’s sat empty — a target for vandalism and decay, with even parts of its facade stolen over the years. Only to be visited by scrappers, urban explorers, and the peregrine falcon that attacked everyone… After years of delays and complex financing, renovation eventually began. The plan is to restore the building and bring back a mix of affordable senior housing and market-rate apartments. A major comeback for a building that’s been through a lot — and a big step forward for this stretch of West Grand.
