Consoles used to read off of the disk directly. That’s why there was no download needed. Consoles today download the games in order to make load times faster. For example, The Last of Us on ps3 doesn’t need a download for the disk version, but takes forever to load. But on the ps4, it won’t take as long since it can read off of the hard drive instead of the disk itself.
