A town in Virginia still has the name Lynchburg. It’s a damn shame.

I read a book about sundown towns. IL has more sundown towns than say, Mississippi or Alabama. And I used to live near the biggest one, Anna IL. They even made the town name into an acronym. Ain’t No N’s Allowed. All of Southern IL is a cesspool of hate and ignorance.

in Alabama, I never took the klan seriously because I was a kid and it's normal to hear about them in casual conversation. people would just describe people as things like "you know, the grand dragon?"

I live in Texas, near Dallas, and there are still MANY active sundown towns in the DFW area. They are less overt now, but no less dangerous or active.

sundown towns still exist in oregon. I live in a town next to one and I have a mixed race child. People watched me and my son like a hawk while I was there one evening for dinner. I didn't know it was a sundown town at the time. you can tell the mentality is still there. 😭

But they say black people don't deserve reparations, we are still being mistreated until this very day.

What are predominantly black areas called where it is unsafe to be white at any time? It’s not right either way but I want to know the term.

I found out where I was born they had this. There was 1 black family that lived in this town. Now, many races live there but up until the 70s only a minute mix of races.

my town (Illinois) was STILL a sundown town in the 2000s, my best friend was stopped by the chief of police when her black cousins were in town and was told they needed to go home because it was getting dark and we had laws against her cousins being out after dark. i genuinely didn't realize how racist this town I was raised in was until adulthood 😭

When I travel across the country, if it’s not safe for Black people, it’s not safe for me.

In recent months we are reminded of this policy/hate crimes. Family land owed by black families for centuries is snatched. Truck drivers reporting road blocks by white men. Black Men have been hung and their death is labeled unaliving, self inflicted, not murder. Then pushed under carpet hoping we forget what happened.
