They’re also called upside-down trees because their branches resembles roots or the “Tree of Life” because of how much it provides. African baobab trees are some of the longest living trees on earth, with some studies estimating up to 3000 years! They can store up to 120,000 litres of water in its spongy trunk to survive the dry season, which ends up also supporting the ecosystem as a whole. As a keystone species, the baobab supports many species for their habitat, food, water, and shelter, including humans! Elephants will scrape the bark with their tusks to access and drink the tree’s water storage! Their fruits, referred to as monkey bread or mabuyu (in Swahili), are packed with nutrients and more vitamin C than oranges - it’s considered to be a superfood! The pulp dries naturally inside the fruit, making it one of the only fruits in the world that naturally dehydrates while still on the tree. I had the amazing opportunity to see these stunning trees while staying at Tarangire Safari Lodge and exploring Tarangire National Park with them! Their guides are incredible knowledgeable and kindly offered to try a taste of the baobab fruits! #baobab #superfood #safari #tanzania #treeoflife #baobabtree #naturalist #naturenerd #neature #natureeducation #treeoflife
