I've never heard anyone criticize modern art because they believe it requires special knowledge to understand. The major criticism I've heard is the idea that modern art often requires very little skill to create, and the fact that it's treated like it has artistic value is a form of pseudo intellectualism.

I think it comes from a place of not wanting to be told they aren't good enough for something. currently there a big culture of "if you're not part of the in crowd you're the one they're making fun of" so people feel personally targeted when they can't immediately join something and be part of the in crowd.

It's like sour grapes except they don't even like grapes and never tried to reach them anyway so why are they mad that they're up so high??

I agree with the general concept, but, and hear me out here, disagree with the example. hasn't modern art and "conventionally successful" fine art simply served as tax break and insurance havens for the wealthy? otherwise yes, I agree that everything will have some barriers and require some effort to enjoy

yes! I remember like 10 years ago there being so much conversation about how supposedly academic writing is "bad" or something because of how much jargon is supposedly used and how anything with too much "jargon" is inaccessible and all this convoluted reasoning for why everything needs to be laid out in its simplest terms. And it's like what do you mean that you shouldn't use the words that we made up for a specific topic when talking about said topic??? idk it's always confused me and makes me think it's all snowballed from there to what we have now

I think you are correct. Also, Intelligence is unfortunately used as a marker for "worthiness" in our society. not being smart is an "insult". I think people who know they aren't smart sometimes become anti-intellectual out of shame and embarrassment. like, my sister is "not smart", it makes her no less worthy as a person and she still has value in society.

I think the hatred for public reading, calling it “performative” comes from the same place

The concept of people being forced at gunpoint every day to look at Kandinsky‘s art is very funny to me, thanks for that

I feel like it’s the exact same thing with art and ai nowadays. People argue that ai makes art accessible because, to make ‘good’ art, so to speak, you have to practice for months/years and expand your skills, something that these people don’t want to do/have no interest in doing. They don’t want to be artists, they just want the instant gratification of art and nothing else.

Sadly, I think it’s a lot dumber than that. I think they heard a tidbit about modern art being elitist one time and they think repeating it makes them sound smart and refuse to let you make them believe otherwise.

But... isn't modern art... elitist... because it can be linked with money laundering, and other such meritless endeavors simply BECAUSE of the lack of the need to adhere to any consistent form, other than "expression"? And "modernism" kind of has lent itself towards the enshitification of culture in its tendency to put the onus of the artist's expression upon the individual, rather than the medium through which it was rendered in whatever form the artist shaped it. There's a lot of good modern art, but here we are, in 2025, with AI Art. It bears no capacity to express itself uniquely, and yet its faculties are the architects of the NFT scam.

Lmao seriously 😂😂 I don’t care to be excluded from space science fiction films especially since I don’t like them. But a few guys have had beef at me not being down bad for the genre and their movies - I’m not subjecting my precious time to a topic I don’t care about 💯👏🏼 I never feel sad

It feels like this is a bigger trend though. Like yes, we have 24/7 access to more information that most of humanity could even conceptualize but also people are way less likely to actually seek out that information. And at the same time people want to seem super smart so they come up with reasons to justify why something is bad/wierd/wrong rather than actually put the time and effort in to learn about it.
