But what many do not realize is that Styrofoam is a brand name, not a material. It was created by Dow Chemical in the 1940s for XPS, or extruded polystyrene foam. This blue foam became popular in construction for protecting buildings, roads, and pipes from heat and moisture. Most people today mistakenly call white foam cups and food containers “Styrofoam.” These are actually made from EPS, or expanded polystyrene foam. Both materials come from polystyrene, first discovered in 1839 by German chemist Eduard Simon while experimenting with tree sap. Over time, XPS and EPS became part of everyday life. From insulation and packaging to school crafts and birthday parties, these materials became part of homes, routines, and childhood memories. Did you know? Real Styrofoam is made of 98 percent air. It feels light but stays strong.
