I don’t understand that either and I never say “soda” … because I have drank soda before and it’s awful because it’s just carbonated water

I suppose it’s the same reason people call all facial tissues “Kleenex”. They grew up saying it.

my understanding from my friend that lived in London for 5 years told me they called everything that was a carbonated soft drink Coke. and his wife who was a British woman when they came to visit us, asked her husband to pass her her Coke and it was a can of Pepsi

It’s soda here in mass. Not sure where the term pop comes from.. maybe the sound when you open it?

Makes no sense on the west coast. Never have seen anyone say Coke when they want a 7-up. Do they also ask for tea when they really want coffee?

Generally considered Pop in Canada.. Coke is coke/pepsi is Pepsi and there is a difference.. In my experience most Americans consider Soda the general term for Pop..

generally speaking, some companies have tremendous branding power. I remember when people would say "xerox this for me " meaning make a photo copy. I never heard coke referring to all soft drinks. but in places where coke is king, I can imagine where all products are coke products ( sprite, fanta) and it's just became part of the vernacular.

I say "Cola" when ordering at restaurants to try and avoid the question of which soda I want. Inevitably they always say, "Sorry, is Pepsi ok?"
