Burritos are actually from the North part of the country, one of the states that sells burritos is Chihuahua. But the burritos people usually think of that are really big, and sometimes covered in sauce are definitely not the traditional burrito. The one you got looks pretty good! Hope this helps ☺️

Burritos originated in northern Mexico during the Mexican Revolution as a convenient way to transport and eat food wrapped in flour tortillas. Legend has it that they were invented by Juan Mendez, a street vendor who used a burro o burrito(donkey) to carry his supplies and wrapped the food in large tortillas to keep it warm. People would say "here come the burritos(donkey)," and that's how they got their name. Over time, burritos became popular in the United States, especially in the South, and became a signature dish of Tex-Mex cuisine.✌

Burritos are not a “Mexican-American invention.” They’ve existed in northern Mexico—especially in Chihuahua—since at least the early 20th century. In fact, the Diccionario de Mexicanismos mentioned burritos as far back as 1895. Just because your family didn’t find them in certain parts of Mexico doesn’t mean they didn’t exist or weren’t Mexican. Mexico is incredibly diverse, regional dishes vary widely. You won’t find tlayudas in Tijuana or burritos in Oaxaca. That doesn’t make them any less Mexican.

Burritos are not common in southern Mexico, you have to go to the northern states close to the border with the US, Sonora for example.

Burritos and burros are from the north of Mexico, also the best beef is from the northwest of Mexico, specifically from Sonora state. The beef in the center/south is gross 😬
