In 2025, the world has reached a critical threshold for flooding, with the U.S. alone issuing a record-breaking 3,160 flash-flood warnings by mid-July, earning the title “Year of the Flood.” Cities like Richmond and Des Moines have faced unprecedented flood warnings, while Central Texas suffered catastrophic July floods, resulting in 135 fatalities and historic river surges. Globally, regions like New South Wales, South Africa, Bolivia, and Argentina have endured devastating floods, driven by climate change that intensifies rainfall due to a warmer, moisture-laden atmosphere. Aging infrastructure, such as the stressed Huffman Dam in Ohio, exacerbates risks, as saturated soils and overwhelmed systems struggle to cope. Experts warn of escalating flood risks unless early-warning systems, green infrastructure, and greenhouse gas reductions are urgently prioritized to enhance resilience and address the crisis’s root causes.
