My martial arts instructor's explanation is that fists are for soft targets, palm heels are for everything else. He also talks about how there's a "myth" that the human face has basically evolved to break as many knuckles as possible when taking a fist, and while the veracity of it actually being an evolutionary trait is dubious, our faces DO break a lot of knuckles

if u ever actually punch someone.. correctly.. even without gloves it doesnt hurt. u can also train on a bag without gloves to strengthen ur wrists and knuckles. this strike is cool but u can still throw normal punches without breaking ur hands
