I almost always work with a reference, or multiple. Bird dance - swan lake, blue bird. Fosse style jazz - fosse obvi. Anything hip hop - you bet im studying the music video 👀

you look at it as a new puzzle/riddle that you need to solve, a challenge.i love those challenges I find it makes me more diversified as a creator. that always works for me

honestly, my favorite solution is free writing. i take the theme or create a prompt, put on a timer for 15 minutes, and just write without thinking (no stopping or editing). i read it over afterwards and see what comes up and how i can associate with things that actually make sense. it becomes a word association in a way and acts as a guide for me when choreographing.

what i do is create a combo for that im feeling and put it to the side. by the time i finish coming up with a combo, i've gotten everything out of my system, im able to create, and i have a combo ready in case I have to teach last minute

Lowkey journaling, cause that oopy gloopy feeling is coming from somewhere so a reset will help. There’s a cool book I read in college by Twyla Tharp called the creative habit she’s got some great things for creative blockage in there

i usually just make 2 dances. the first one will get it all out of the system, then dk the actual one. or i try and make a challenge with it. this year i choreographed a tap solo blind.

I literally just start accepting everything I think of- good or bad. Then later I revise it and fix it. It’s easier to fix than start from scratch!
