okay so first I was like- Where's Superstar? where's new man? but the more I sat with it the more I realized season 4 has many more amazing episodes than I remembered. your list is so, and honestly, Even if it's not exactly how I would rank them, every pick makes sense. that being said, I humbly submit Superstar for consideration. I mean Jonathan deserves something.

It’s funny how it has more, better individual episodes than other seasons, however, it has one of the worst overarching storylines with regard to the Initiative, and Adam. Narratively, it really might be the worst season, but episodically, it’s very strong!!! Maybe even the best in terms of the most great single episodes.

I still maintain that when ranking the seasons of Buffy, season 4 is at the bottom of my list. It just barely ranks under season seven for me. But there are NO bad seasons of Buffy. The only reason I like it less than the others are because while it has some of the most iconic episodes in the entire series, the arc of the season as a whole didn't feel as strong to me as the other seasons, nor did the main villains. They weren't bad, but not as good as the others to me. (As much flak as season 6 gets, I don't count the Trio as the Big Bad of the season. They're a red herring to distract us.)

I’m with you: I just recently watched season 4 & liked it more than I did the first few times before. One of my favorites that you didn’t mention was A New Man featuring Giles. It cracked me up & I loved the Giles/Spike scenes.

there are so many good individual episodes in season 4. fundamentally the thing that brings the season down is Adam is such an unsatisfactory villain.

My rewatch of Season 4 felt the same. I have never enjoyed this season because it felt clucky. But this time, it made sense because it was everyone’s new beginning. The humor in this season is peek Buffy.
