You could be right but here’s a theory: the reason MAGA never leaves Trump is because they’ve already made an emotional and identity investment in him, and so they defend him as if defending themselves. But they have also made emotional investment in the lurid Epstein story, which was fed to the MAGA base for years: some day all evil will be revealed and justice will befall the guilty. Now Trump is commanding them to stop believing the Epstein prophesies, but that belief has also become core to their identity, and the sheer desire to unlock the Epstein mysteries will make MAGA turn in Trump.

I think it all comes down to plausible deniability. All people deep down already know the truth, but it’s ignored based on the feel of the crowd. They control the outcome by making it taboo to say derogatory things about Trump in certain groups. If no one speaks up like the kid in the emperor’s new clothes, people will stick with the false narrative.

I now hear some Trump supporters tell themselves, "I still support Trump" every time he does something they find disappointing, as if they have to convince themselves of their support. That seems like a special kind of hell and I love that for them.
