The tarantula hawk wasp has a logical reason as to why it has 2 other animals in its name. It is known for killing tarantulas and laying its eggs inside them to feed their babies. They kill tarantulas, therefore they hawk at them, and that’s where they get the name. They hawk at tarantulas

Carl Linnaeus, who came up with taxonomic names has a ton of delightful descriptions in his work, such as describing Lichen as “worthless trash of vegetation” and amphibians as “unloved by God”

Imagine being an awkward young scientist who discovered a new bug. Your colleagues are excitedly gathering around you and shouting "WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO NAME IT!?" As they're waiting with bated breath, eyes fixated on you, you freeze. Your brain empties, like it's never had a thought before. In a panic to save face you can only muster 3 words. DIABOLICAL! ironclad? Beetle. You breathe a huge sigh of a relief only to realize that your colleagues are strangely silent, then a rumble of laughter begins to spread, before they collectively gasp, and finish with a proper 90s Slow Clap. And that is why you're no longer a scientist...

dragonflies have the highest successful hunt rates of basically the entire animal kingdom at around 95%, so they deserve a scary name tbh

We found a “rapid wolf spider” in our house yesterday. Don’t worry, it’s not dangerous even though the name is insane 😅
