Nah - I don’t buy it and it’s a lazy take. Morrissey was perfectly capturing the awkwardness and angst that most teenagers experience. Especially introverted, sensitive young men in that time and space. I believe they broke up as Marr was burnt out and doing too much (all music, management etc) and Morrissey was increasingly erratic, resistant to change and difficult to work with. 4 iconic albums in 5 years is pretty good work though!

morrissey’s songs are about a lifetime of experience, heartache, unrequited love—also, he’s a very literary character, so I think mixed in with the autobiographical elements there’s a bit of fictionalization going on. I think anyone who is gay can recognize this more acutely, but if he did have any affection for Johnny, it wasn’t the inspiration for all his lyrics. They didn’t even record their music together from what I’ve read. Seemed like they both had different lives and were only working together for a brief period, and morrisseys songs continue to be about rough trade, homoeroticism, etc. Johnny doesn’t fit the description tbh

I’m 57 so the Smiths were a major band when I was in college. I remember him claiming he was asexual because that’s what you had to do back then.
