The silence part after requesting a lawyer is sooooo important

Andres Sapp (the autistic one) :
People in the comments acting like cops are your friends are wild. Don’t talk to cops. They’re only there to gather evidence for prosecutors. And on top of that, people with ASD are often marginalized and abused by law enforcement who misinterpret their mannerisms as suspicious.

Autistic people are often seen as “suspicious” for our natural way of being. Everyone saying this isn’t necessary is WRONG

genuinely why does she need to know what to do if she’s arrested because most people don’t get arrested for no reason xx

Super cool and very well done! As a lawyer I had this conversation with my very people pleasing hubby many times. And I definitely will have this conversation with any kids I might have, neurodivergent or not. People who say that you don't get arrested when you do nothing wrong, usually don't have any experience with law enforcement and are not oart of any marginalised group. It is important to be prepared and realise that law enforcement might not always act in your best interest, especially if you're not a cis white straight able bodied neurotypical dude.

Autistic people are murdered by police officers because they are not trained mental health professionals..these comments are DELUSIONAL. It’s not to get out of actually stealing, it’s because people INCLUDING POLICE take advantage/mistreat autistic people.

You’re setting her up for failure because that is not how police process people

The amount of people that don’t get this🤦🏼♀️I think it’s great to prepare people for these kinds of situations. How many times have other people got the blame for something they haven’t done? Autistic people don’t always understand authority, meaning there’s a chance they could act in a way with police that could get them in further/real trouble. Talking through how to handle police interactions is great at minimising the possibilities. Shop lifting is just an easy example to use for a scenario

people underestimate how easy it is for the police to get a false confession out of a disabled person, as things that are mildly uncomfortable to an NT person can be devastating to us, and how simple it is for them to take our ability to defend ourselves both verbally and physically. there's DOZENS of videos of police zip tying wheelchair users hands together to force them to rely on their arresting officer, and seizing mobility aids to keep people from standing for phone calls or walk to lawyer appointments. it's not illegal in most states and countries, though it absolutely should be.

great, teach your daughter to not comply with the people who are trying to help us and keep our homes safe. Teach her to hate the police even though they're the only people ensuring we don't get killed

People aren’t understanding that not every cop understands autism or and not every cop has the intention to serve the public. They are just people too. They can make bad choices at their jobs too, as we see on the news everyday. As a parent, we should be preparing all our kids for these situations. Her words and actions are not disrespectful. She’s teaching her not to fear cops. Fear can make a situation spin so fast and turn to disregulation which can me misinterpreted as noncompliance.

I get wanting to prepare your child. Ido the same with mine. Teaching “police are bad/don’t talk to police” may not be effective or safe. Children with autism can have black-and-white thinking, this could make them too scared to ask for help if they’re lost, hurt, or abused. In my experience, an effective alternative is, teaching the law, not fear. knowing what’s illegal (like stealing) & how to communicate with police if something happens. Sadly, police don’t always have proper training with autism, and meltdowns can get misread as aggression or drug use. This is why roleplay & scripting are important, it can teach children skills, tools & confidence to use in any situation, not just one specific scenario. I worry teaching fear can put up more barriers and could put them in even more danger.

Yep. Police hate autistic people. All of our behaviors are seen as suspicious to them. Something as simple as getting pulled over can be overstimulating because of the lights and sounds and it’s used against us. Good mom.

I don't understand why so many people are freaking out about teaching your children about their constitutional rights. People have been convicted because of false confessions all the time. It happens to those with autism and other special needs even more.
