Plus, "non-problematic" media can be triggering for some ppl. It's not always gore and guts and dead doves. It can be an unhealthy family dynamic that hits too close to home. Trauma appears in a lot of different ways.

another part of this conversation that always makes me sad is that when some of these people are asked if they think violent crime in fiction (like murder and other abuse that doesnt involve SA) should be censored, they downplay the severity of the trauma these things cause. they act like no one *actually* could get triggered over it, and talk about how murder victims aren’t alive to get triggered as if there aren’t surviving family/loved ones or people who have survived violent attacks. it’s just so invalidating to victims of all kinds and ironically comes across as downplaying real life crimes more than fictional content does :(

if your traumatised by something, your best bet is to filter it away on ao3 or go check parental rating sites regarding a game/film, it’s not on the creators to censor something important to their plot for a few people!

Also, media that covers taboo, uncomfortable topics or the topic trauma can breed EMPATHY for the victims of those trauma, fiction can encourage you to step into the shoes of a victim when you yourself are not one.

I'd argue that this attitude is partly the result of algorithms curating the kind of content people experience, therefore they get into the thinking that the internet should curate itself like an algorithm.

What's wild to me about this mindset is how recent-minded it often is. Like, the dark romance genre is 15+ years old but its talked about like it's a brand new, scary thing. I've been reading DR since 2009 & Booktok dark romance is significantly lighter than early 2010s DR.

I've had people try to tell me that me writing something is 'disrespecting the victims' or 'I went through this and I don't like seeing it in fiction so you shouldn't write it's. And then I point out to them that I, too, went through that trauma, and this is how I cope. They don't like that.

Things have happened to me also, i am ok either way with most media, but some is just for shock value and i wonder about artist intent. I almost hate some artists/writers for it.

My concern is also folks who REFUSE to curate their online space. Instead of blocking/muting/not interacting with the content the upsets and/or triggers them, they continue pursuing it. Why make themselves miserable???
