This year we set up a 22 vegetable beds and a pollinator garden. Yes, 22! We’re only a few months into this exciting project, and we’ve already learned a lot. Here are some of the big mistakes we made, so you don’t have to. And for reference, we have a small yard of about 1/4 acre. You don’t need much land to grow a big garden! 🍅 We waited too long to get a composter and tossed a lot of valuable food scraps that could have been used to create nutrient dense soil. We hesitated at the cost, but ultimately wish we just pulled the plug and bought one earlier. 🍓We had trouble finding raspberry trellises that made sense and weren’t an eyesore. We ended up returning a few before Nic made these (in my video). They’re not complete yet, but you can see the structure he’s working on and he was surprised that it ended up being a lot easier than expected. 🐰We foolishly thought the bunnies wouldn’t eat our veggies if we planted a few decoy lettuce heads for them. We were wrong and they ate sunflowers, corn, beans and more. These nets are a life saver for our plants and I wish we started using them right away. 🐝 I highly recommend adding pollinator friendly houses, baths and flowers as soon as possible. Since we added these elements we’ve been seeing bumblebees, butterflies, hummingbirds and many other critters having a blast in our yard. 🫜 We planted too much too close and needed to thin quite a bit out in order to let everything grow. It might seem counter intuitive to pull good plants out, but you’ll end up with a lot of somewhat decent veggies, instead of fewer incredible veggies. Give them space to grow!
