@lampertmd: I removed 12-year-old silicone breast implants from a patient experiencing pain and severe capsular contracture. She decided it was time to part ways with implants so we performed an explant with total capsulectomy, a breast lift for reshaping, and fat transfer. As we opened the capsules, the difference was clear... One implant was round, the other squeezed into an oval shape due to heavy capsular contracture. One capsule was unusually thick and filled with cloudy fluid, which we sent for culture. The consistency? Let’s just say it was giving “calcified calamari” 👀 This is a strong reminder of the importance of follow-up care with your plastic surgeon, especially if you have silicone implants. The FDA recommends imaging (MRI or ultrasound) 5–6 years post-op, even if you’re feeling fine. Stay informed.
