✨🐓 The secret to easy chicken chores? Choosing the RIGHT substrate for your setup! Every coop is different, and what works for someone else might not work for you. Here’s what I’ve learned works best for different areas: 🐓 Inside the Chicken Run: Construction Sand is my go-to! • Source it from your local landscape company ($15-$30/yard) • One yard perfectly fills our 16x8’ run • Look for small-to-medium granules (NOT play sand!) • Drains well, dries quickly and pairs perfectly with The Coop Scoop for easy cleanup 🏠 Inside the Chicken Coop: Premium Chicken Sand + Hemp • Premium Chicken Sand under roosting bars • Sprinkle hemp on top for super absorption • The hemp catches moisture while the sand stays dust-free and easy to sift 📝 Hemp is amazing but here’s the thing - it’s not very effective for sifting. When we developed The Coop Scoop, we tested it with every substrate. We even made a prototype for sifting hemp, but it left a LOT of small waste behind. Hemp is too large and chicken waste too small. Stick with smaller substrates like sand, coffee bedding, or coconut litter. The Golden Rule I Live By: ✅ Coop substrates = moisture-absorbing (prevents ammonia buildup) ✅ Run substrates = well-draining (prevents bacteria and mold) Think of it this way - your coop needs a sponge, your run needs a strainer! Happy coop cleaning! 🧹✨🐓 #backyardchickens #chickenkeeper #chickenchores #chickenkeeping #beejeweledcoop #petchickens #chickencoop #cleancoop #coopscoop #chickencare
