People don't understand that using a cane essentially means sacrificing an arm to save my leg. I can't open an umbrella while standing up, I can't open a door while holding my phone, keys are a nightmare, I have to sit down to adjust my headphones. Nondisabled people just don't get it.

A new mobility aide is like learning to walk again.

Also so so many disability aids aren’t really “chosen” unless you’re wealthy. Otherwise you’re given what you’re allowed to use by insurance companies or another org and unless you get lucky with someone helping fund other methods you get very limited options anyway. Thank you medical industry.

There is no mobility aid that easily replaces the body . I get exhausted no matter what aid I use.

yes!!! even with new glasses, people are told theres an adjustment period to how they feel/fit/how you see, etc. The same thing applies for mobility aids like wheelchairs/crutches/canes!

This is, ironically, why I don't use mobility aids for the most part. Like, I should probably be using a wheelchair, but I'm not strong enough to really use it on my own and I can't afford to buy an electric one (plus a new car to transport it). So, I mostly just don't leave the house instead

Getting transportation while using a scooter or a chair can be so frustrating. Some ubers refuses to pick me and my mom up when they saw her wheelchair.

Yes! Who can afford all these ‘innovations’? What if they don’t work or worsen existing conditions? It’s not a foregone conclusion that bodies restore when aids are swapped back. Don’t get me started on medication roulette.

My walker was chosen for the stability I need while still giving me the most independence possible and a place to sit when I need to sit. Going from wobbly walking, to using a cane to using a walker was an wdjustment for each and hoping the body adjusts, while adapting how I do everything, where I can go, for how long etc etc etc. I'm not looking for pity, I'm looking to be able to live my day to day without falling or overdoing it.

I get so many glares when I go out with my crutches, but since I have gotten my powerchair people are either nicer or at least just ignore me. Does no one understand how hard crutches are to use? They are exhausting and my wrists and hands hurt so much.

Using a manual wheelchair supports this thought.. using a manual wheelchair puts an individual at a very high risk of shoulder and wrist injury due to continued use of said wheelchair for mobility

I spend 98% of my time alone so I'd be the one having to load a scooter or a chair into my car which is the primary reason I haven't gotten either yet. They would drastically improve my quality of life but my potentially paralyzing spinal cord issue would flare up the first day I tried to load them which would defeat the entire point 😭

I used a four pronged cane because sometimes I am off balance in the mornings don't need it mid day and always need it in the evenings (although it goes everywhere with me) and people act like I am using it for pity. Also I have to constantly stop and let people pass or take out every ankle and small children if they don't gently pull their kids aside. I have a child and when he was little, in crowds, I held his hand. no one does that anymore so sometimes I almost take out small children. I have proprioceptive issues too. It's exhausting.

I use a quad cane. It took me weeks to get used to it. The amount of time I hit my feet, nearly tripped, hit walls and doors (I still do this sometimes 😂), and drop it. I've learned to work with it, pick it up when it falls without bending over, etc. Even the rollator wasn't so simple when I got it.

Even before I really needed my cane full-time, I carried it so that it would HOPEFULLY be an indicator for other people that I'm going to be moving slower and I need some space. Didn't and doesn't keep people from stopping right in front of me or clipping my hip and other things like that. It's so frustrating (and dangerous, for me!!)

The frustration with that kind of “advice” is very real. Like, I’m probably the best person to give advice on my own challenges. You’re not going to tell me something new. 🤭

But even with the very best aid, something will be harmed more. I tried the Go Zeen and it really hurt my inner thighs. Like, there's always a trade off
