The United States builds completely car centric cities and refuses to build real public transit networks in the majority of the country. This is to please and feed the car and oil lobby. People in the United States spend much of their time sitting in traffic and sleeping. This, coupled with the fact that many people WFH and work in offices, further reinforces our almost completely sedentary lives. Don’t get me started on the bad unhealthy food. People here are bound cars and offices. Socially, in most of the US, walking/biking and taking public transit is looked down upon. It’s a negative class indicator. You wouldn’t want to “look poor” would you? And anyway, in many places, you can’t get around without a car anyway. This is on purpose. To give more money to the car and oil lobby. Our poor health outcomes have nothing to do with not smoking, and everything to do with car centrism and capitalism.

I did a photo project on this! I went out to concerts/bars late at night and took photos of strangers taking a smoke break. Lending someone a lighter or asking for a smoke is one of the last great ways to meet someone.

There is actually a large contextual correlation between the start of the obesity epidemic and the popular culture push to stop smoking. No clue if they are actually related but the timelines add up. Could be that processed and fast food also popped up around the same time.

I think the collapse of our society is due to the lack of common spaces. We don’t have populated malls like we used to. People don’t have places to go to just exist around others anymore and staying at home is more common than ever. That’s my opinion
