Hmm the symbolism, an interpretation: the magpie is small and unassuming. He collects the twigs, dirt, and mud; not items usually associated with value. Yet, with these equally unassuming materials he builds. He builds for himself, he builds for his future, and he builds for his children. He builds for the future magpies. He does this while chirping a song, a song that all can appreciate. The tiger with its magnificent patterns and powerful claws, travels independently. Too aggressive to surround himself with other tigers, for they are Percieved as threats to his power. A challenge to the territory. He does not build, and he does not gather. He hunts and he consumes. And when the song of the magpie falls silent, surely there is a tiger near. For his presence, causes the brave to go silent with fear. The silence becomes the warning.

That gives the “I made it for the tiger but the bird keeps taking it” line have more meaning. Jinu’s common man roots won’t let him forget himself 😂

could this be a parallel to Jinu and Gwi-Ma? In the beginning, it seems like Jinu tries to outsmart Gwi-Ma with the Saja Boy scheme, not to mention how he subtly tries to mock him. Jinu does it all for himself, not out of any loyalty to Gwi-Ma, and, in the end, he does sabotage him. idk if I phrased it well or if it makes sense, but it's interesting to consider

I think they follow Jinu around showing that he once was common wealth but then was a wealthy fool after leaving his family behind?

Cat works for Jinu who chose a wealthy life. Bird has three sets of eyes who eats the messages and steals the hat. Who are three commoners who would want to mock or slow the tigers efforts?✨📚☕️

i have a head cannon that at some point we figure out gwima not only messes with jinus memories but his mom n sister have been with him as the tiger n magpie this whole time. probably wouldn't work right but it's fun to think about!

the derpy tiger represents both humans and demons that believe themselves better than the other in terms of suffering. the magpie represents the small few who believes in such harmony in acceptance of oneself and others. at least what I learned from the movie.

Also they are guardian gods, not demons which I found the implications of fascinating - like why would Jinu have Dokkaebi running around the demon realm with him and why would Gwi-Ma allow it?? Cause Derpy disappeared into the statue with blue flames, and he traveled through the streets the same way leading Rumi to Jinu

So, they don't break or get bound by the Honmoon. While it's kinda obvious they are homages, they're also the same thing then as they are now, here, rich v. poor(common). But the other part is that, they aren't demonic in nature, they act as Guides themselves. Considering the Saja Boys, and specifically Jinu, are all Grim Reapers of sorts, What if these guys are like the Alebrijes in Hispanic Folklore, such as in CoCo. They themselves also act as Guides in the Land of The Dead until they rest. Which would also make sense why they stick around until Jinu is gone. Because now he's rested, and Not all of the demons started as Humans. Dokkebi Aren't human and they don't have guides. but the Humanized souls might have them until they find their final resting place. You don't see anyone else with them, which is to say everyone in the Gwima's throng is where they're supposed to be.

People telling me they didn’t like the movie just because they didn’t understand the actual history and stuff behind. It bothers me so much like just learn about the histories so you can understand and appreciate the movie.

this is backwards the tiger=the people the magpie=the ruling class that's why the bit about the hat is so good "I made it for the people, but the ruling class keeps stealing it"

The movie felt rushed and heavily targeted to sell merch. So perhaps to sell a brand.

My head canon is that those two (in the film) are actually Jinu’s mom and sisters spirits working to help free him from the demon realm. The Tiger being his mom and the magpie his sister.

Tiger was also protector and good luck while magpies bring good news. “Paintings of the pair were placed on the front gates of houses on New Year’s Day to wish for good fortune and luck in the coming year. Tigers were believed to expel evil spirits, while magpies represented bearers of good news.”

I thought they acted as guilds. I know they said Jinu was their master, but i think they follow him because they knew he didn't belong in the demon world. slowly guiding him to his true destiny

The tiger, like Rumi, is a link between worlds. He travels between both. He’s also not judgmental, which is in keeping with the theme of the movie. I don’t think we ever see the magpie in the demon realm. His personality is the opposite of the tiger’s, aligning him more with the human realm.
