Polyphonic perception isn’t a real term.

People just wanna be different, it’s a result of modern society’s obsession with diagnosing and pathologizing every facet of life and no one wants to admit that they’re just an ordinary individual. So they take rather mundane phenomena and attach a label to it to make it sound special. Then say “look at me I’m *insert term here* is anybody else like this?” Come to find out everybody is also like that…cus it’s not special 😐

best video I saw was the girl saying she has polyphonic tastebuds and can taste the lettuce, tomato, cheese AND the bread in her sandwich

oh but it is polyphonic perception - perceiving multiple sounds. What it isn't, is a flex. Everyone does it. ie right now, I can hear the radio playing (and the vocals, guitar drums etc) and my dog barking and the rain and the traffic outside..

The Word Cartographer :
A bit more clarification: Polyphonic Perception generally refers to being able to perceive individual melodic lines that are played simultaneously and that are usually distinct but interwoven. Most people can listen to a song and pick up “bass drum goes boom boom, snare goes tap” or “that’s a guitar, that’s a piano” and probably sing, or at least hum or grunt something somewhat close to what is being played on a particular instrument. Polyphonic perception in this case would be being able to listen to the fugue example I used and be able to distinguish the individual melody lines, but also replicate them by singing or tapping them out simultaneously (like singing one line and tapping out the rhythm of another with your hands accurately). This would be remarkable for someone with no musical training or background. Most people can probably hear that there are individual melody lines being played in the fugue, but being able to single each one out individually instantly and then replicate them would be more in line with the real definition of polyphonic perception

Idk I feel like the second example is just a harder extension of the first. I don’t have any musical training and just had to focus a little more. Doesn’t deserve a special name…
