i might go look into this cause early childhood development is fascinating to me; but I wonder if its because at that age they have trouble understanding abstract concepts, love being an abstract concept, and that people can love more than one person/thing. Like they aren't necessarily being selfish and consiously wanting to be the favorite, they just haven't quite grasped that when the person giving them attention gives attention to somebody else it doesn't mean all of a sudden they don't love you anymore. Like... object permanence but for non-physical things like love. I ramble when I get phsycological/philosophical but kids brains are weird I can totally believe there is a part of their minds that just don't yet get that people can love more than one person at once.
