In Canada we stand on the right side, and walk up the left side. We also leave an empty step in between the ones standing. Our escalators are wide enough too 👏

London subway had conducted experiment, that when the escalator is fully occupied on both sides, the flow of traffic increase 30% per hour. its for the greater benefit of every traveler

If people stand on one side, only half of the escalator is being used effectively as relatively few people walk up. In crowded countries, using all the available space carries more people. The "leave half the escalate empty" rule slows everyone down at peak times.
