there's some misinformation : .... the dad left the kid unattended from morning to evening for days, plus the door to the mom room (mom was hospitalized) was often closed. People said the child was seen perched on a chair near the baby crib, and the staff did not intervene. The baby was found by another mother and not staff... source I speak French and read the articles

When my brother got into his car accident when him and I were in high school. The Cincinnati Children’s security didn’t want to let me back with my parents to see him. Finally a doctor had to force them to let me. So why was he unsupervised in a hospital at 6

As a premie who is a mom , my soul left my body. Those parents deserve to be prosecuted, the child needs a psych evaluation and the hospital needs to be investigated

Where I live in Canada, maternity ward and NICU are separate. No children are allowed in the NICU due to carried infections that the babies cannot handle. And the door is kept locked and you need to show your NICU band (different from the hospital band) to even get into the NICU. Both of my daughters spent time in the NICU, one due to sugar levels and IUGR (born full term at less than 5lbs), second daughter was born 6 weeks premature. Why was he even allowed around such fragile babies?

Few reports about this story I heard is that the 6yr. old's mom is herself recovering as well as the newborn & that the 6yr. oldest father leaves the boy at the hospital from morning til evening with the mom to watch him. Why is he leaving a child with a recovering mother & newborn sibling (in NICU) instead of arranging for a babysitter, relative or keeping the kid with him out of the hospital as much as possible. Having a child in the NICU is already highly stressful, both mom & baby are in recovery, the mother is Not on vacation. The father of the 6yr. old should be charged, face very heavy fines & serious jail time for his Abject failure as a parent & husband which resulted in the death of an innocent preemie & indescribable trauma for the parents & family of precious baby Cassandra. The hospital, especially the unit is Not a daycare & the staff's responsibility is to their patients (recovering mothers & babies). The hospital should Also be sued for not ensuring that entry & exit to the NICU is strictly monitored and secured. Also, the should jave told the 6yr. old's mother that if her husband does not come for the child by (2hr. window max., if so much) then they will make a report regarding the father for negligence & call CPS, as No child (except currently being treated & boarded) should be left at the hospital regardless of the mother being a patient or not. Their responsibilities are to the safety & well-being of the mother & babies. They were grossly negligent in not securing access to the treatment rooms. Also, aren't premmies hooked up to machines to monitor their vitals? Why didn't any of those go off when the boy opened the bed case thingy (can't remember name of it now)? Aren't there cameras outside of treatment rooms to pick up on who enters or leaves? Whoever was supposed to be monitoring cameras in that area weren't doing their job. I don't trust the integrity of the hospital's internal investigation. If it shows a breach or dereliction of duty by a staff member, the hospital will be culpable & firing that member of staff would Not satisfy justice. Furthermore the hospital would likely lose funding & reputation.

It starts with entitled parents who think they shouldn’t have to watch their kids while in public and leaves it up to everyone else!

Please do a follow up! Parents are 100% to blame. Most nicu’s have all the same monitors at the desk, so they can see what is going on,if they have to be outta the room. Those parents DEFINITELY need held accountable for not watching their child

I have a 25 weeker who spent 3 months in the NICU. Our NICU had very strict rules about siblings visiting and didn’t hesitate to step in if there was something challenging going on

Hi and the first one to admit that I like the idea of gentle parenting, but the lack of any parenting in the society is unreal. I see it every day in my job and I bet those parents got mad at staff who tried to parent that kid before this happened.

Our NICU didn’t allow children. Not even siblings. And I completely agree with that. My daughter met her brother eventually and everyone was safe.

I am the grandmother of a nicu baby not a premie but spent several days in nicu and this is infuriating. The parents need to be held accountable as this is on them for not watching their child and allowing the child to roam. In our nicu I did see young kids in there one time but they were accompanied by parents and were only there briefly and never left alone. Nicu is not a place for young kids/siblings.
