We're told that capitalism is a meritocratic system, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Capitalism is actually at odds with the concept of meritocracy, because under capitalism, the more "capital" you own, the more you can acquire. It is a system that inherently favours those who have over those who don't. The two biggest determining factors for financial success are birth circumstances and how willing you are to exploit and step on others to get what you want. Hard work, talent and skill barely have anything to do with a person's success. Some of the hardest working, most talented or skilled people in the world live in abject poverty, while some of the luckiest, laziest people are billionaires.

What?
We call people in society who were given a rough start "disadvantaged"... Meritocracy is kryptonite to the rich and powerful. The best schools, connections, and titles don't compete with a smart, hard-working nobody with an eWaste computer and public WiFi.

Powerful message and I agree with a lot of what was said. Capitalism is a broken societal model that sets up a vast majority of people for disappointment. Setting disingenuous expectations in youthful minds which they gobble up only for them to grow up realise the truth is more nuanced than they were told. Eventually they realise they've been lied to and life isn't making sense like they thought it would which leads to frustration and ultimately disillusionment. More often than not Capitalism as an ideology falls face flat. It's unsustainable. Thing is even you could put in all the work and still fail but the system will have already programmed you to believe that your failure is all your fault. Yet as we know the truth is always more nuanced than that.

I think this is a wrong way to interpret meritocracy. To me is a society where people , regardless of personal traits or beliefs, will be evaluated for their accomplishments.

Not in South Africa. Meritocracy doesn’t apply for the powers that be but that goes back for 6 decades

Something about the class systems throughout history always felt very intuitive to me. But to even suggest such things today is treated like some horrible discrimination.
