First off, DeepSeek is NOT a copy of OpenAI's O1. As the CEO of Perplexity explained in a recent post: "There’s a lot of misconception that China 'just cloned' the outputs of OpenAI. This couldn’t be further from the truth." DeepSeek R1 has actually figured out RL finetuning—a groundbreaking approach where they didn't tell the AI how to think. Instead, they presented problems and said to the model, "Figure it out yourself!" Through trial and error, the model learned reasoning from scratch, rather than imitating other humans or models. This is outlined in their paper, DeepSeek R1 Zero, where no SFT supervised fine-tuning was used. 2. Another common myth is that the model is censored. Yes, if you ask about Tiananmen Square or Taiwan, it may give government-approved answers. BUT—this model is open source! You can run it for free, adjust the weights, and remove censorship. Take Perplexity, for example—they use DeepSeek without any censorship by tweaking the model. 3. Lastly, some users are concerned about China stealing data. As a European, quite frankly I don’t see much difference between what US tech companies do. If I’m worried about my data, I can’t stop OpenAI from collecting it through ChatGPT—but with DeepSeek, I can run it locally and keep my data private and safe because it’s open source.
