Add More Flowers to your Vegetable Garden! 🌸🌼🌻🐝 One of the biggest mistakes I made when I first started growing vegetables was undervaluing the importance of flowers, but since I decided to make them a priority, I’ve noticed so many benefits. 😊🌸 Companion planting certain flowers alongside vegetables has helped to reduce pest issues, I plant nasturtiums to draw pests such as cabbage whites away from brassicas, and strong smelling varieties such as marigolds and sweet alyssum can help to mask the smell of other plants too. 🌺🐛 Many flowers also draw predatory insects into the garden and restore a more balanced ecosystem. Tansy and fennel are loved by ladybirds for example! 🌼🌱 Flowers also increase pollination and therefore crop yields, as they attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, wasps, and even birds into the garden. 🐝🐦‍⬛ If you struggle to get a good harvest from fruiting crops like aubergines and courgettes, then a lack of pollinators could be your problem. And due to issues such as habitat loss and the widespread use of pesticides, pollinators need all the help they can get! Many flower varieties are edible and medicinal, so they are healthy, taste great, and add colour to any plate. A few of my favourites are nasturtiums, calendula, marigolds, borage and violas. 🌸🌼 Many flowers varieties are really easy to save seed from too, reducing costs and increasing resilience. And of course they also help lift your mood by adding so much beauty to any space! 🐞🐛 So let me know what flower varieties you’ll be adding to your garden this season? 😊🌼 #pollinatorgarden #flowergarden #companionplanting #vegtablegarden #gardeningtips
