@internet.anthropology: What’s the nutritional value of the content you’re consuming? Will content diets become more important as we live our lives more online than offline? #internetanthropology #anthrotok #food #substack #bookclub #johnmulaney #dualipa #celebritybookclub #books #bookstylist #whatiread #BookTok #CapCut
from the perspective of the curators this is also a synthetic form of authority: it creates a class of people who have the power to restrict what others consume.

in my mind there are clear differences between consuming everything from an algorithm vs from one persons recommendations. word of mouth continues to be most goated method of spreading info.

wow you’ve just put words to why those kinds of “content/media roundup” pieces drive me nuts

Restriction is needed in a world of abundance! And we are so bad at it.

Key difference between calories and content is that over-consumption of calories is highly conspicuous and socially undesirable (people are motivated to lose weight to look better). While people can see the effects in their own mind, over-consumption of media is still far more private and less stigmatized than obesity. Until there’s social pressure to put the phone down, it’ll be hard for people to go on a ‘diet.’

📚 Just started a year-long experiment: sticking to one print news source and reading one physical book a week. No scrolling, no noise—just deep focus. Let’s see what clarity feels like.

Sooooo interesting!! I don’t mind the curation content when it’s genuine, but sometimes it feels labored and performative

This is kind of the whole point though I think. Ryan Holiday talks about this often. Now that we have all the info it’s not just about what you consume, but the application and focus on that content.
