Choice feminism reminds me of people who say “women keep choosing the wrong dudes” or “well she chose him” is response to hearing about domestic violence like it just doesn’t make sense.

Every choice by a woman is not inherently feminist. Women can only be called feminist if they declare themselves as one. I still chafe at the idea of women as childlike victims who can’t reason within the admittedly patriarchal society we live in. Women have agency even if it’s not “perfect”

This is such an amazing take, specifically that just because a woman is in a position of power, it does not mean it’s a feminist win. My thesis was on this woman Martha P Falconer who was contracted by the federal government to reform “delinquent” young women during wwi and turn them into “models of domesticity.” While some argue she was a pioneer in education reform and she made significant contributions to the war effort it was really her utility to the goals of gatekeepers in male power structures that allowed her to transgress traditional gender roles placed on women. I just really felt compelled to comment on your post to tell you how you articulated so well my messy thoughts on this whole tradwife movement and how uneasy it makes me because of how it echoes what the government wanted women to be during wwi… or literally for all of history lol

Hannah Neeleman grew up religious Mormon. It’s framed her view of life. But she still chose her husband and her lifestyle. There’s a race to innocence by that people apply to some women and I find it disconcerting and sad. I try to apply agency to women like ballerina farm until they tell me otherwise.
