its not racist, its sexist on purpose. The song is saying that a womans greatest feat and purpose is marrying a man which is where Mulans journey begins. The only "racist" thing i can see is the omajes to chinese culture such as respect to the elders and family and the value they put in beauty and art. Arranged marriages were a part of many cultures and i think thats the main topic of the song. if there is anything else that is racist please tell me cuz i dont see it. Also its Disney making a movie about all types of cultures and people, its not gonna make everything perfect. Hercules is insanely bad at cultural representation lmao but its not racist, i think Mulan and Hercules got the same treatment and their movies come from the same intent.

The whole point is to highlight that mulan and women are not walking stereotypes like the song wants them to be. We really need some critical media literacy lessons here

“how is it racist” “how is it orientalising” bruh do people not realise that “honor” in east asian culture is an over-inflated white person thing. how it’s so reductionistic. how porcelain dolls arent even a chinese thing and linked to china purely because porcelain. how it got called china dolls despite again. no link. but plays into stereotypes of China. how we dont actually paint our faces — that’s geisha. that’s JAPANESE but whatever helps you all sleep at night. anyway that whole scene was a disney invention and not part of the original ballad of mulan but ok. you all know better.

The lyrics are intentionally stereotypical. It’s a satyrical song, they’re making fun of the ancient patriarchal mentality that confined women to the role of housewives

chat as a chinese person i loved mulan and still do 😭 yeah some of the character designs are hella caricature and stereotypical but i never looked at mulan as said “this offends me it’s racist and bad”. if anything the live action “respectful” one was more offensive

I still maintain, as a grown woman who has seen many serious movies, that mulan 2 (the second one specifically) is the most racist movie I have ever seen in my entire life.

Had an opportunity to take Chinese history in university and learned that “pearl” is a historically accurate term of endearment that Chinese aristocratic fathers used to address their daughters. I understand how it might seem racist, but some of the lyrics actually reflect good research and understanding of Chinese history! It’s actually still used as an idiom: “a pearl in one’s palm” to express adoration.

i think people are so conflicted because mulan as a film in america was incredibly important for a lot of young girls who didn’t get to see asian women represented in the way she was. we need to be able to accept that movies can be damaging and empowering at the same time.

i think that’s also the point of the trend it shows the subversion of the tropes the lyrics are referring to and how womanhood is not this fragile concept

Did y’all even watch the movie? They are making her go to the match maker in the beginning of the movie OF COURSE the lyrics aren’t the most appropriate. It’s a song about how she has to marry and make her family proud no matter what
