Fake tanning is bad for you, but in general, the best defense from skin cancer (aside from staying out of the sun and SPF, but then you wouldn’t get the tan you want)— but the best defense from skin cancer is getting a slow and gradual tan over time. Darker skin is less likely to get cancer, so if you are pale but would want a tan, then the best approach is a slow and gradual tan over like a few weeks. Best way to start is by sitting in the shade— because you still get tan when sitting in the shade. Keep each tanning session to be about 20-30 min daily. Starting in the shade, moving into the sun the before 10 and after 6, and then going for longer time periods.
