@jennyannhelms: I Work Out Because I Love My Body—Not Because I Want You To. 💪 I used to wonder if my muscles were ‘too much.’ Turns out, they were—too much for a culture that wanted my body to be small, soft, and sexualized. But this body? It’s for me. 💥 Not a performance. Not a product. Not for hitting your dopamine receptors. Just mine. *** Right or wrong, I used to think people commenting on my muscles (especially men) was about their fear I would be stronger than them so me not "getting bulky" was about their insecurity about their own strength & muscles. A good guy friend of mine shared that they likely weren't insecure about their muscles, it was more likely that they wanted me to stay within what they found to be attractive and that even though none of these guys were my partner, felt it was important that my body/me stick to that and they had the right to tell me what my body should be to be attractive, good, okay, etc. Regardless of gender or if that truly is what their comments were about, this is my invitation for any of us to opt out and not let people telling us what our bodies "should" look like wound us. For me, the biggest wound is how I used to internalize this myself, and when I believed it. For anyone dealing with a body that isn't exactly what society deems "attractive" (cough cough, all of us), here's an invitation to reflect on any ways you've bought into that idea and wounded yourself by believing it. Believing that your body is not about you living an authentic life or being what it is as you live that authentic life; and permission that your body gets to be what it is. #bodyimage #reclaimingmybody #formenotforyou #womenwithmuscles
