it’s hard to find stats that evenly serve backcourt and front court the same. The most surprising to me on this list is Paige. You should do points and assists and see the guards and then merge the 2. don’t weigh rebounds or assists as more just count the # if that makes sense

Would be curious to see the rankings last year. CC has been injured essentially this whole season and that’s obviously affected her game. Would love to see a redo when CC is finally healthy again

Fun project! Im afraid you have some flaws in weighting the stats and some of your conclusions. For example FG% from guards that shoot farther out will be different from posts who typically shoot closer and have higher percentages. Also in general the stats affect on winning game. Rebounds help less than people think (also higher for posts) and TOV hurt less than people think (players who run offenses and handle the ball more have more TOV and not every TOV results in a score against you) Your conclusion on Caitlin Clark can be easily summed up by she has been injured 4 times this year. Do this for last year and you should see a noticeable difference even with the flawed methodology. AllStars isn't also purely about the best players by stats.

I think the amount of games they’ve played also counts. The fact that Satou Sabally, Alyssa Thomas, Paige Bueckers, and A’ja Wilson are in the top 20 with 17-18 games played with those stats means a lot

You are my people! 😳 can you please run one more to weight for games played? If you’re feeling really frisky maybe one for how many the team has played and then one each player has played. 🙏🏻

Stats don't tell the story. you can get double doubles all day, long, slapping the ball back and forth on there backboard. Me bounds he's not a compliment. also, if your presence on the floor it is high assists and moving the ball, constantly and constant action and making all your players better. That doesn't show up on the statline.

I’m a biostatistician and I love sports, especially women’s sports. On the side I do consulting for some companies who offer “sports analytics” and sometimes the numbers don’t quite paint the picture of who is the most impactful or skilled on the court. For example, your best defender may not having many steals or blocks but they might be able to guard all positions and the court and force a lot of turnovers. Maybe they don’t get the block, but they go all the way to the rim with their man and make the shots hard to get off. Maybe they lock down the best player on the court and it disrupts the other team’s offense. There were definitely a couple of questionable players this year, but sometimes it’s about doing the things the stats simply can’t capture.

I’m a data nerd and a WNBA lover as well. I appreciate this, and I don’t disagree that those top 20 players are absolutely phenomenal, but I also feel like this approach falls short in a few ways - namely the conflation of core stats with the overall value status of a player - i.e., who is “the best?” Lexie Hull is a good example of a player whose stat line will never reflect the actual contribution she makes to her team and the game, but there are others. Adding to that, a more interesting stat than points per game would be points generated per game - i.e., the individual person’s points plus points they generated via assists. I wish the W tracked points from turnovers, like as a ratio of turnovers made by player X that amount to points from player(s) N. 5+ turnovers could be a lot, but if there are zero points made off of those turnovers, that’s better in some ways than 1 turnover resulting in 3-4 points. Anyway, I love this stuff, and I love seeing other people be nerdy WNBA fans!! ☺️💕

The most important stat is one that is a bit hard to accurately calculate, but its calculated a few times per year that I’ve seen. It is Most Points Created. Its a summation of a player’s points scored + points generated from each assist (2 or 3). The best players generate the most points for their team. Caitlin set a WNBA record by a wide margin last year. She must be averaging near the top again this year.

Points created is probably the most important one. That’s points scored plus assists = points created aka points responsible for. Last year, for example, Caitlin Clark was responsible for 1,106 points. She led the league.
