@biolayne: Sugar Killed More People than Heroin, Fentanyl, Cocaine, and Alcohol! I like a lot of @mikerowe ‘s takes, but this dude on his podcast is absolutely full of it (tag him if you know him) He claims that sugar consumption was less than 1 lb per year in the 1860s. I assume he is referring to added sugar. He then says current low estimate sugar consumption is 250 lbs per year & possibly up to 350 lbs of sugar. Again I assume he is talking about added sugar (excludes natural sugar). This equates to 1.24g sugar per day in Abe’s time vs. the claim of 311-435g sugar per day now Unfortunately, this is completely & UTTERLY FALSE. Current consumption of added sugar per day is approximately 68g (CDC data). But how does that compare with the 1800s? We don’t have consumption data from back then but we do have food availability data Keep in mind food availability is always a greater number than the actual consumption but they track together, more availability = greater consumption. In 1875 the availability of added sugar per year was approximately 40 lbs per year whereas in 2019 it was 123 lbs (PMID: 35118102). Now don’t get me wrong, this is still a 3 fold increase, but it’s not even CLOSE to what this dude claimed. Also, if we look at why it’s problematic, it becomes clear. In 1909 the total caloric availability per day per person was 3400. In 2010 it was 4000. That’s an increase of 600 kcal per person, per day. How does that match up with added daily sugar intake? It’s an increase of 50g of added sugar per day to 153g available added sugar which works out to ~412 extra calories per day. Which means the problems with sugar intake are explained by the excess calorie consumption. In fact, in studies that control calories, we do NOT see independent negative effects from sugar, it appears to be an issue of excess calories (PMID: 30787473) Also, high sugar consumption is associated with a 30% increased risk of mortality & this increased risk is only due to the excess calorie consumption but use of heroin is associated with a 300-400% increased risk of death (PMIDs: 30590448 & 26386826). This dude is absolutely full of it & is not interested in facts, just trying to create hysteria #sugar #cico #nutrition

alcohol isn't available to kids, or those other things, even too much protein in the body converts to sugar,

It’s like the more they get exposed, the more outrageous they have to make their claim. He couldn’t say something reasonable like 25-50 pounds. That would at least SOUND believable. But dude went to 250 pounds of sugar per person??? What??😂

Alcohol, or ethanol, gets oxidized to acetaldehyde which gives you that hangover. Then converts to acetate, then CO2 and water. It does not get converted to a sugar, or carbohydrate.

350 pounds of sugar a year…that’d be 1 pound a day.

Do you even understand that alcohol turns into sugar? In fact most ingested items convert to sugar. You're a PhD in what?

How do you think people get obese? This guy is way off. I've counted calories..Sugar is definitely worse than any of those. Obesity, diabetes and yes heart disease are all increased by sugar

heart disease kills about over 600,000 people every year. obesity kills around 300,000 people a year so I'm sure sugar plays a huge part in that. cuz they didn't get that way from eating protein and vegetables

there are more diabetics in the US than alcoholics and opiate addicts. if roughly 40 million Americans are diabetic and a combined 20 million Americans are addicted to opiates or alcohol the data shows food in the US is worse than opiates and alcohol.
