Nobody outside N. Ireland cares about it.
I used to say I was N. Irish but now I don't bother. I too am starting to embrace my Irishness but quietly in my soul I'll always be N. Irish.

The “British English “ don’t have any common connection with Ireland/ northern Ireland/ North of Ireland. Unfortunately the unionists think differently.

yep, I am in Britain and honestly 98% of them see us all as Irish. the other two think we are all British. and when they do know enough about Ireland to make a comment, I have been asked more than once if I'm from the civilised bit or the part up north... that is how English and world people for the most part see it

My bf is from Belfast but his family lived all over England and he worked in London and Portsmouth for years. He said English people don't care and actively call all of us Irish Paddys regardless of background. We live on the island of Ireland so to them we're Irish. He also said they didn't understand the 12th at all and pretty much said it was cringe that we have flags waving as much as we do 😂

also when all Ireland was part of Britain it was "Irish unionists". they still referred to themselves as Irish, Edward Carson referred to himself as Irish and spoke Irish. this "britishness" of Irish unionists only started after partition

Even in Scotland, only a fringe of loyalists even think about it, and the rest essentially don’t see any distinction.

You cannot live in Ireland for 400 years & not be Irish, you also cannot be an Ulsterman & not be an Irishman, Loyalist communties have been sold a lie by their political leaders, the British view them as Irish & are well aware their ancestors were mainly Scottish Planters

I don't like "northern Irish" as it feels degrading to me that some random English ppl in a room created some nationality and demand I use it. I'm not anyone's property I just live in Ireland so Irish.

See the UK is a Union Country so you can't just be British, it's an umbrella term, you have to be something else as well. Like English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish. So yes you're Irish. Northern Irish is Irish with a direction in front of it but as a UK citizen you can most certainly call yourself British. That's the Nationality of the UK but don't say you're not Irish cause you are

My mother is from Donegal,I lived there in the summer. Now I was born in Scotland and served in the British army. When I joined up everybody from Northern Irish was known as paddy. After Brexit I took out an Irish passport. I don’t care a diddly squat for the religion of anybody

I had very similar experience when going to uni in England and starting to refer to myself as Irish, only caveat for me and why I do still consider myself northern Irish is that I have also met a lot of southerners who don’t want anything to do with us and still think we’re all violent psychopaths. So I might be Irish but if they are going to other my Irishness and try to invalidate it then I’ll happily distinguish myself as a different type of Irish because despite the violence and hatred all around I managed to become not a Brit or Irish I don’t hate one or the other and I am proud that I am northern Irish, we’re fucked up and backwards and we don’t function but all us northerners have so much more in common with each other than any other group of people
