@no_the_robot: Which film did you like better? 🤔 Also be sure to check out @lovenyula’s video about KPop Demon Hunters vs Elio! The animation style of KPDH feels a lot like Spider-Verse, yet it also feels totally original and unique. Netflix animation has been on an absolute roll, and partnering with Sony animation has been a very smart move. So why did Gen Z skip Disney & Pixar’s Elio? ##kpopdemonhunters##netflix##animation##pixar##disney

no bc the original theme of Elio being about not being accepted as a queer kid, and then the irony that Disney can't accept THAT story and waters it down...

The deeper plot and themes really hit home with so many in this demographic. With two major characters struggling with shame, fear and regret with a strong focus on dynamic and positive relationships with friends instead of the usual trope of “my romance will fix me”

As a 16 y/o Gen-Z, I didn’t watch Elio simply because I’m sick of Pixar and Disney, their movies feel so rigid—perhaps even conservative—and childish, they’re more interested in money than they are interested in telling a compelling story—that’ll be controversial among close-minded parents who’s opinions haven’t mattered in a decades. I also feel like the reason Disney casts people of colour as the main character in remakes, is solely so they can deny that they aren’t inclusive, when in reality they truly aren’t. Their ‘representation’ is as lazy as it gets, that’s not to say that I have anything against white characters being played by people of colour, but it’s hardly representation when their story has zero cultural influences.

Simply put, kpop demon hunters has stuff that gen z is interested in, elio has almost nothing to entice us. Sony knows that they’re succeeding and will continue to do so, while Disney and Pixar are so stuck in their old ways to embrace where the anim industry is now

I'm an older Gen Z with no kids who has been a kpop stan since 2013. I didn't have a problem with Elio as a concept or animation style, BUT the trailer I watched for it had a joke that was something along the lines of: "wow, this place is amazing!" "... this is just the bathroom" and after that, I was instantly turned off from paying for the movie. I'm not going to pay 20+ dollars to see a generic kids film filled with literal potty humor. I'm not a mother, so I also have no kids to take to watch the movie. Kpop Demon Hunters on the other hand, I didn't need a trailer or any visuals, I just listened to a 10 second clip of "How It's Done" on TikTok and was watching the movie within a hour 🤷‍♀️

It's also an animated movie that has teenage viewers in mind, something damn near unheard of in this medium outside of Sony. They know that that's a market that's been severely ignored, and is making up for it by putting out movies like this one, Spider-verse, and Mitchell's vs the Machines. Giving them stories that meet them where they're at and don't treat them like little kids

i think its important to note that kpdh is on Netflix and its not something you're paying extra for. Elio went to theatres and if you have disney plus you are paying for both plus and a movie ticket

Consider the following: only putting movies in theatres *after* they’ve been successful on streaming. I’d pay 50 bucks to see KPDH in theatres no question. I enjoy the moviegoing experience but sometimes it’s a letdown when the movie is sub-par.

people also don't realize that Gen z is made up of 13-28 year olds. kids don't act like kids anymore. they have been introduced to things I as a 23 yo didn't understand till I was 18.

I first heard about elio when the first look was released like 2 years ago (this was admist the Wish debacle i think) and then didn’t hear anything again until i saw 1(one) billboard sometime around the release. I dont even know when it came out just that it was after lilo and stitch which had ads every third video on YT by the way. Im not surprised tho they did the same with strange world.

I went to the movies somewhat recently (April I think) to watch the Miku movie (absolute gold of a movie) I found out about Elio through the ads before that movie, that’s the only advertising I saw, and thx to another vid I found out Disney did this exact same thing with marketing to a different film, I think it was treasure planet or Atlantis, and back then they did this to keep doing princess movies, I think, I don’t fully remember 😅 also I’m an animation student, what you said at the end of empowering women, poc and lgbt ppl is so important bc I was disappointed at Warner for it, I went to a panel where a Warner bros. executive was telling us what the company wanted and since we were all Latinos there someone asked how cultural we could get, the executive had to tell us that we had to focus that Latino culture to Mexico exclusively, bc of the global market knowing mainly about Mexican culture when it comes to Latin America, she said you could get away with sprinkling other Latin American cultures in some episodes but yeah, letting ppl of all backgrounds tell stories regardless of wether the story will make money should be more encouraged

Another thing: People want stories *everyone* can connect to. Elio felt like the generic “weird kid who wants to be understood” archetype, which isn’t a grand demographic. General audiences can relate to Rumi’s insecurities and perfectionism. The same goes for other original movies. General audiences can relate to generational trauma in “Encanto” and general audiences can learn about history and racism from “Sinners”

as someone that *occasionally* goes to the cinema, I'd say even if KPDH released theatrically, it would still be incredibly popular. I watched ATSV multiple times in theatres as well as The boy and the Heron, and I was also planning to watch nezha 2 and turning red (I didn't get time lol). As someone who is Gen Z, going to a movie needs to be an event, it needs to be fun. Disney and Pixar movies have lost so much of their lustre. As mentioned in the video, these movies are incredibly sanitised and fail to understand not just young audiences, but audiences in general. I remember being in that theatre and feeling how hyped everyone was for ATSV, and the anticipation we felt towards the end, and that's why the cinema experience won't go away, these companies need to just up their animation game and let go off that extra box office revenue lol

Thank you so much for bringing nuance to this conversation. Too many people that I have seen want to dismiss Elio because of the art style and they’re not taking a look at the corporate side of things or the creative decisions that other companies are making that do affect the way that people view Pixar specifically.
