We had this problem on a 2006 Scion TC. It was cheaper to get an engine from the salvage yard than the kit, and a new head cost.

I just tape the whole deck off. Way easier than stuffing rags everywhere. And it covers the cylinders.

M54 bmw engines are same story, I had one overheat so bad the thread inserts pulled. Don’t overheat aluminum blocks 😭
