Why wasn’t Khalid ibn al-Walid martyred, even though he led battles from the front lines, and there was no spot on his body that wasn’t struck by a sword, spear, or arrow—yet he never died in battle? When he embraced Islam, the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave him the title “The Drawn Sword of Allah.” If he had been killed or martyred, it would have been an opportunity for the disbelievers and enemies of Islam to say, “We have killed the Sword of Allah” or “We have broken the Sword of Allah.” So, Allah protected him until he died on his bed — a sign among the many signs of Allah in the lives of the Companions.
