Couldn’t agree more. Thanks for stepping out of your comfort zone to share this. Listening respectfully to others often means having to let go of the identity we’ve crafted for them in order to fortify our internal reality. People often knee-jerk against discovering the world isn’t as against them as they thought. Some are just seeking to climb the moral status ladder, sure. But many are deeply suffering, and we no longer culturally promote the tools and role models they need to work through their pain instead of immortalizing it through every interaction possible. IMHO, seeing our personal response evolve to discomfort (and even triggers) over the years can be a profound measure of our how far we’ve come in processing pain. It can be liberating. No wonder so many people are trapped in a suffering stasis, when predominant culture coaches them to see trauma as a permanent identity instead of an inciting incident in their journey to a version of themselves they couldn’t even imagine before.
