I think women hate this specific performance cause it feel like they're only doing it deceive women into thinking they're men in touch with their more fem side, and safe? hard to explain. like of all the performances this one is the most targeted to women feeling safe around them

ppl don't clock that both radfem and manosphere critiques of "performative" men are identical in their reliance on gender essentialism. They both function under the belief that men inherently want to dominate women and that any man who suggests otherwise must have ulterior motives.

Is it just me or has there been a big shift recently towards traditional gender norms recently especially compared to 2020 like rn the ideal man is big and looks like they could “take care of a woman”, but 2020 was the skinny “pretty boy”

comparing misogynistic men not believing women have the capacity to enjoy music that men enjoy (the band tee comment) due to the fact that they don’t see women as intelligent beings as a whole to women making jokes about men who post about clairo and labubus is definitely a choice

Gender itself is a creation of patriarchy. Any characteristic no matter how arbitrary or small they are that is perceived as an aspect of a specific identity or role culturally is absurd and imprisoning. Yes gender is a cultural performance because it's a choice, a pre established set of roles and ideals. The goal is to move beyond gender. To abolish the concept and to live as an authentic individual rather than a string of concepts.

I feel like it’s the hypocrisy that might also empower the critique of performative male, when this stereotype is thrown from other men it’s because the performance doesn’t adhere to the standard masculine performance but there is the other angle which tries to uncover the fact that most or many of the so called performative males don’t jenuinely like the things they pretend to but rather they do this to appeal to a female gaze. As in, it’s the flipping of the script on pick me girls but for men. Am I cooking or just yapping?

Is not because it doesn’t align with social norms, is because one feels more honest. The gymbro & the hodae guys are more honest in their approach, while the performative guys are just “pick me”ing. Generally guys do not fake liking beer to impress girls, but matcha might be different.

Great video. But what if the distaste is about the motivation for the performance? “Performative men” are usually ridiculed as doing it superficially for success with women - howver I feel your sports example references behavior motivated to fit in and match the role better in everyone’s eyes (and for themselves!)

i call it Football, Fashion, Fascism. I believe that 90% of soccer fans dont actually like soccer. (lets be honest here its a really boring sport that hardly goes 2min without a stoppage). Fashion, one season people will die on a cross for their love of 80s fashion and the next session next season they wouldn't be caught dead in 80s clothes. Fickle convictions. Fascism because people like what their told to like or they like what those around them like.

I would just like to point out that gym bros are absolutely called performative. And both tomboys and girly girls are also called performative. Though, with this, I still think it plays into subversion. Leaning to far into or away from the norms/expectations calls attention to the fact that gender is a performance. This subversion is why twinks/bears and femmes/butches are more well-known outside the queer community compared to the rest of the queer community.

Tbh it’s become a meme not because the men are partaking in feminine expressions. I feel that has been largely accepted, though I do see a push and pull with it. Maybe some of the memeing is from bigots. Which is unfortunate. But I think it’s being widely accepted to make fun of them, in certain stereotypes, because a lot of these men are doing it for female attention. And some of them will get on here and admit that! It’s cool when people find trends and feel aligned to express themselves along with them. But it’s also true that expression can be used for manipulation. It’s actually one of the easiest things to use. Which is why they’re being called performative. Men can like those things! But atp it’s not really random when you’ve watched people’s entire personalities and expressions change, esp based off of whatever woman they want to pursue
