I watched this whole video and nodded because I share so many sentiments (of course)! When they’re good, they’re GOOD! But each year I do less and less because the $ isn’t there anymore.

Not only are vendor fees going up but attendee fees are going up too. Like I don't want to pay $70 for a Saturday ticket when all I want to do is be in the market.

maybe you could fill the void of markets by doing some mental health related corporate events? Some can have a wide range of vendors and partners, especially if you are willing/able to lead a breakout discussion or sponsor a segment in some way. I could see your booth being popular at a conference for teachers, therapists, or even certain HR circles, for example!

I do markets every single weekend during the summer. Last weekend almost broke me after 7 years. Not for any particular reason, I often have rough markets, it’s part of the game. But markets have made all the difference in my sales and following. A huge part of me cannot wait for the day that I can quit markets. Another part of me knows I’ll miss it one day. Market life really isn’t for the weak. Keep your head up!

it's so sad seeing how SO many things are becoming inaccessible bc costs just keep going up so high. I'm sorry you're having to go through with this. I love your business and will continue to support! ❤️

Association for Play Therapy has a big conference coming up in October. It’s a week long conference that has huge turn out. I don’t know if they already have their vendors but it’s worth checking out.

Girl trust me this is how I feel about creating handmade crochet clothing. It’s so much time spent into making the clothing. And all kinds of market place options there is out there is making me want to quick seller crochet as a whole. Which saddens me so much but it’s getting so hard to make an average profit that’s slowly tanking. I’m now focusing on nursing school unfortunately 😩💔

Sell the van - rent one for an annual market, choose a different place every year - don’t do it for the sales, go for the adventure you’ll take afterwards. Dedicate an extra day or two after the market ends to sight see and take a real “vacation”. The sales would just be a bonus for the little bit of extra work you did lugging everything around with you. ✌🏻

Maybe just do markets within a certain radius so you don’t have travel expenses?

I did a small town market and I will never again deal with them fairs and festivals only for me for the market we all had to sign an agreement about costs and such not realizing that after the 200$ deposit for the booth that after the market was over we had to pay 10% of our earnings to the organizers and I said never again.

Yes, it sounds like you do enjoy them, but you are coming back from a long trip, you’re tired and you need a good rest, a good meal, and some perspective. You can always let go of what didn't work and keep doing what did work and focus on enjoying the ride.👍Love the work you do!

Watched this whole video and can feel all of the points you made. I’m fairly new to markets but I’ve learned so much, especially that they’re definitely not for the weak! 🤣 Thank you for sharing your story, it truly helps to hear others talking about their thoughts. 🥰

I wouldn’t completely quit, always keep it as a backup and use the markets for vacations that can be wrote off on your taxes. This way you’ll have the option to return it for some reason you need to or a good opportunity may present itself and then you are prepared for it. Busy of luck. Also maybe make it a thing to only go to markets under a certain fee when you do decide to do it and just make it rarely.

I truly feel like you would do amazing at actual conventions. Knowing the types of vendors and people who shop at like comic con and mega con, they would love your stuff 😩

Maybe the effort put into markets could be recentered to workshops for creatives or people wanting to start their business. I'd much rather see you mentor than exhaust yourself doing markets.

I would say looking at your shirts you need more moms. So I would look into school markets, fundraiser school events. Maybe just the wrong market area. good luck

I am an organizer. This is my job. I do about 20 markets a year and a 13-week farmers market. My farmers market booth fees are $20 and the other markets are usually $75 a day. after venue advertising signage flyers and supply costs I don't profit very much. I can pay my rent but I don't have health insurance and I drive a 17-year-old car with $250,000 miles on it. I don't do this for the money. I do this because I like to help other small businesses. And at that price point I think it's a reasonable price point. I will say that a lot of people feel that they should be having a ton of sales at markets instead of considering their booth fee and advertising expense. retail is diminishing and people are buying things online but a lot of people like to see feel touch and smell the items And as retail stores are diminishing craft shows are a good place to get your products out there. Even if they don't make a purchase that day they may choose to build a relationship with you and order online. And I will tell you after every single event I will have a customer reach out to me that attended and didn't purchase something and now they wish they did and I have to connect them. So don't give up hope. I would perhaps just do one market a month or less. but keep up the good work your business looks amazing.
