When I understood it, it was when I understood “oppression “ I’ve never been a fan of “oppression “ of a people, any people, by any people

When I lived in southern Illinois (transplanted Tennessee), people were so freakin racist, and quickly started treating me funny as soon as I made it clear I wasn’t down with how they spoke. One woman I worked with was talking, and tried to think of how to say what she wanted to say without pissingme off, but COULDNT. She seriously went “sorry, Lexi, but, them sand********.” Really? You couldn’t think of “Middle Eastern” ?

9/11 did it for me. The things I heard people saying about the Middle East after that were absolutely horrid. I was only a teenager at the time, but I still knew that the things these people were saying, even after what had just happened, were just wrong and vile. There was this hijabi girl in my home room that was always soooo nice. Just the most positive, friendly person. I’ve always wondered if those same people said that stuff in front of her and really, really hope they didn’t. And these were just other kids at school. I can only imagine what kind of horrific stuff their parents were saying.

I remember hearing that term for the first time after the towers fell. They couldn’t understand why I didn’t think it was cute and clever. 😟

I knew when my 3rd grade daughter come home from school saying she hated Saddam Hussein. I went crazy on that teacher. We look somewhat Arab, but are Black. You will NOT indoctrinate my child about who to hate. They have not done anything to me. Now y’all, on the other hand, well….

I was 26 during 9/11 and my co-workers visceral hatred and use of slurs was shocking, and I haven’t seen it get any better really.

first time I ever heard it was probably after 9/11. a friend's daughter had gotten kicked out of a local hotel cause she called the middle Eastern person working behind the counter that for no reason at all. I started drifting from my friend right after cause she repeated back to me without an ounce of shame or anger

I grew up as an eye wide open yt girl in George w bush’s south and I heard that term a lot. My jaw hasn’t moved at any of the despicable events since then. I feel like Ive watched a 20 year car crash up close in slow motion without knowing how to stop any of it. Whatever feelings the Middle Eastern people feel towards us is valid.

Hi :
I was in college the first time I heard someone use that phrase and I was gobsmacked. What was scarier was that none of the people that surrounded them seemed to have any problem with its use either. Your brother was not alone

They absolutely saw something wrong with saying that! They were letting him know who they are, and that they’re not at all ashamed of it!
