i’m a mortician. whenever i watch a dematting, i always think of this one younger woman i worked on. she had beautiful, long, bright blue hair. she had obviously been in the hospital for a while and was completely matted in the back. a few older male embalmers said they would just cut it short. i asked if i could work on it for a while (i used to style wigs so i know how to dematte to an extent). i spent 3 hours getting every matte i could out. i ended up having to cut a little bit out, but i was able to keep the length. hair is important. it’s a part of our identity. i never met the family, but i am glad that i was able to make her look a little more like herself.

I helped an older lady in the psyche ward untangle her hair. she had been living in the woods and had such big mattings with leaves and sticks in it. I spent two days unbrushing all of it and told her to put conditioner on it and wash it out the next day. she looked and felt so much better 💜

i imagine advice and education to prevent future matting was also included. i with there was a service like this when i was a kid i rat nested HARD an just told to kep brushing til it goes through... ik better now

i love salons who dont discriminate or judge bc of matted hair i used to have it (yes that bad) bc of my depression and i went to a good salon and they were SO respectful also her hair DOES feel lighter and yes the wash def felt good (saying that from experience) and i love that it didnt make her scalp red sorry for the long text but i love places like this

this happened to me during quarantine, i got so depressed that i just couldn’t get up and wash my hair. hair got so matted, went to the hair salon by my house, and was there from 12-9pm. one of the worst but most relieving experiences of my life
