what's interesting about their dynamic is that they're both vicious and sincere in the same breath. and the story itself subtly depicts a lot of v¡olence in the world in which the characters are taking place as well as in the characters' attitudes themselves, and as such it makes it even more compelling to see how wu suowei and chi cheng connect as people. chi cheng can see through wu suo wei's act to some extent (though he doesn't know his motives) and he's very forward about the shallowness of his own interest towards wu suo wei, only wanting his body at first, which is in line with his characterisation as a sly and insatiable figure. yet, even with wu suo wei putting on an act that chi cheng is entranced by (the push and pull technique), wu suo wei's strategies and behaviour is so unique in and of itself that you could argue that what chi cheng is entranced by are actually wu suo wei's real personality traits, such as his boldness, his contradictory behaviour, his witty playfulness and scheming in and of itself. and i like how genuinely questionable the characters are with how humanly scary they can be in their decisions and reactions (such as chi cheng's ruthlessness toward people who cross him and betray him, or wu suo wei's fairly cruel deception in how far he's willing to take his plan), because when we see what actually affects them and makes them gentler, they are faced with aspects of themselves that they are both not used to seeing about themselves, and it forces them to actually explore or live with those feelings. such as the scene where wu suo wei intentionally disappears for two days, and chi cheng is feeding his snake. the snake refuses to eat because he wants to be fed by wu suo wei, and chi cheng comments on this, and looks pensive himself. the snake is a reflection of his own yearning towards wu suowei, and it's touching when chi cheng then says to himself:
