big fan of this take, but so distracted by the picture of the Dinosaurs in the background 😭😆 “I’m the baby, gotta love me!”

I’m definitely less attractive than average but I am avoiding plastic surgery because I want to look old, I want to look wise, I want I be witchy and cool and a vibe. I have bad facial dysmorphia but I refuse to give in- it won’t help, and it won’t be me. I have great style, I’m smart, I’m artistic, and I love everyone fiercely and that will carry me through life better than artificially made beauty ❤️

I go back and watch 80s movies and the beauty is SO diverse. Newer films are full of mar a lago face/bodies.

My husband is an artist a painter and he clocks plastic surgery even when I don’t and he always talks about features and how they naturally sit on the face… I just think artists who focus on the face have a more honed “uncanny valley” radar

Great take. We have not been taught how to appreciate aesthetic beauty in our consumer culture. Uniqueness is seen as departure from a singular beauty norm and not a spectrum of artistic expression.

You articulated this so well. It’s so boring if we’re all just the same.

Agreed. I love everyone’s unique beauty. I think there are things we can do to enhance that, but the aesthetic we are seeing now is so homogeneous. The women who get procedures to look younger never look younger they just look like they’ve had work done. I recently moved from LA area to New York and I do feel like there is more uniqueness here where in LA every girl I knew had their lips done and it definitely took their unique smile away. And each persons unique smile is one of the first ways we see their beauty

beauty is like art - it's supposed to tell a story, not sell a product

i fully agree that our societal beauty standards arent capable of truly appreciating everyones unique beauty, but i dont necessarily think your 'original' or unaltered body would be more proportional than one that has had surgery, since most surgery, aside from achieving identical features, is often about 'correcting' the natural unevenness of the face to create better proportions. not to say that symmetry is a good measure of beauty, or that asymmetry cannot be beautiful, but in our society symmetry and sameness are societally considered 'superior'

I have my insecurities for sure but I can’t help but think I would be robbing the future version of me of meeting the natural/true version of older me if I were to intervene.

Agreed. It really hit me watching Love Island and seeing all the non-black girls with lip filler. Do your thing AND… why is everyone chasing a singular formula of beauty?

I think a good narrative that explores this that old episode of The Twilight Zone where two objectively beautiful people were getting surgery to cure their “ugliness” and at the end you realize everyone else looks like literal pigs 🐷 and that was the beauty standard somehow.

I kinda feel like if the arts hadn’t been defunded and devalued in American society we’d have a hell of a lot less people getting aesthetic homogenization procedures. We get minuscule doses of art and an over-saturation of ads.

I look at the way Charlotte Rampling has aged naturally and she's so beautiful. and she looks like herself + experiences and stories and I love that.

I don’t disagree with you and I also have thought about it… You have addressed this at the beginning video: you are gorgeous - and this beauty grants you privileges you may not even realize sometimes. Some people find themselves in such debilitating distress because of their “lack of attractiveness” they are unable to function - and yes it is totally societal and driven by companies investing billions of dollars for specific aesthetic…

I love this, I love letting other ppl do whatever tf they want and I love unique beauty SO MUCH. An unpopular opinion, just alone fitting into beauty standards/trends doesn’t actually give the power that people think it does. I think someone with traditional appearance of beauty and someone who looks different can both either harness or cut themselves off from the power of beauty. We all have the power to access and harness “pretty privilege” 💖

*cosmetic surgery? I had my nose fixed so I could breathe… technically plastic surgery. Burn and scar surgeries are plastic surgery. I don’t want the same face as all the folks in town, but the breathing has changed my life! 🤣

Super agree with this. It’s so hard to speak about, because any criticism is perceived as “not empowering or supporting women”. I would love more nuanced discussions about this.
