@whit.amos: I never knew how deeply I could love children I didn’t give birth to.. until I met them. They weren’t “mine,” but every piece of my heart said otherwise. I showed up for the bedtime stories, the school projects, the scraped knees, the belly laughs. I cheered at games, soothed fears, and tucked them in like any mother would. And then one day, everything changed. No one tells you that being a stepmom can mean loving kids like your own… but losing them like a stranger. The world doesn’t give words to this kind of grief. There’s no clean break, no shared custody for the heart. Just silence where their voices used to be. I lost bedtime hugs, little hands in mine, and the sound of “I love you” from little voices I still hear in my head. This love didn’t end just because the relationship did, and for that.. I thank GOD. They are just as much a piece of me as they ever were. 🫶🏼
